Put Sunday 15th December 2024 in your diaries folks, because the London Pantomime Horse Race returns to Greenwich!
For those unfamiliar with the event, it is undoubtedly the daftest race of the sporting calendar. Teams of pantomime horses (that’s a couple of people in a wacky horse outfit for out ‘Merican friends) basically go on a pub crawl around Greenwich on a Sunday afternoon attracting large crowds of supporters and bemused tourists. Who wins? I don’t think it really matters. Just everyone has a very silly and very fun time.
Race organiser Mark Biddiss has been convinced into bringing back the race after a five year hiatus caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. An announcement of the event on their Facebook page hints that this might be the “last time”, so if you’ve never experienced it before, don’t miss your chance this time around.
This year the race is raising money for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital (a very worthy cause). The race route is yet to be announced, but expect it to include The Kings Arms, The Greenwich Tavern, Ye Olde Rose & Crown and Richard 1st at the very least.
