The Kings Arms is one of the oldest pubs in Greenwich, dating back to the early 18th century. Established in 1718, the pub has been a significant part of Greenwich’s social life for over 300 years. From as early as the 1930s the pub was known locally as “The Bunker”. A sign outside the pub offers two theories as to why. The first theory is the pub was used as an air raid shelter, a ‘bunker’, during Blitz air raids; the second is that coal heavers would prop their shovels outside the pub an ‘bunk’ off work. These days, its location makes it a popular spot for tourists visiting Greenwich Park and the Old Naval College. It’s also popular with locals and hosts a pub quiz every Thursday.
